What freelancers actually use this for

Use case 1

Tracking hours per client

Each customer is a row in your local list. Click Start, do work, click Stop. Switch customer with one click. Tags for project / phase / activity. Idle prompt asks what to do with gaps.

Use case 2

Sending an invoice on Friday

Submit week, click Invoice. Get a branded PDF line-itemed by customer and project, with your hourly rate, VAT, and totals. Email it. Done.

Use case 3

Auditing your own time later

Plain JSON files on your machine, archivable forever. No vendor going out of business deletes your records. Diff a week with git if you want to. Open settlements in 5 years.

Use case 4

Working across two machines

Use the same Dropbox / iCloud / OneDrive folder you already sync. Mac at the office, Windows laptop on the road - both see the same data, no extra account.

Use case 5

Checking your weekly billable goal

Set a daily target (e.g. 6 billable hours / day). The app shows progress and tells you when you are behind early enough to course-correct.

Use case 6

Fixed-fee project budgets

Quote a project at 40 hours? Set the budget; you get a warning at 80% and 100%. No more discovering you are 30 hours over after delivery.

Common freelancer questions

Why pick a desktop time tracker over a SaaS one as a freelancer?

Three reasons: (1) your client list and hour data live on your own machine, not in someone else's database; (2) it works on a plane, in a coffee shop with patchy wifi, on a client's locked-down VPN - anywhere a desktop app runs; (3) per-user pricing is lower than typical freelance SaaS trackers - EUR 5/user/month or EUR 50/user/year vs EUR 10-15+ on most hosted alternatives.

Does it generate invoices?

Yes. Submit a week, click Invoice, and a PDF is generated with your company name, address, VAT number and logo, line-itemed by customer and project. No external invoicing tool needed for simple billing.

Can I sync between my laptop and my desktop?

Yes. Point the app at any folder you already sync (Dropbox / OneDrive / iCloud / SyncThing / NAS) and your time entries follow you across all your devices automatically. We do not run a sync server - your existing tool does the replication.

What if a client wants me to use their time-tracking system?

Track in this app for your own billing accuracy, then re-enter or paste the totals into the client's system at the end of the week. Many freelancers do this anyway because client systems often round, lack project budgets, or do not generate the invoice format you need.

How much does it cost compared to typical SaaS time trackers?

EUR 5 per user per month or EUR 50 per user per year (save about 17%). Comparable freelance-focused SaaS trackers run EUR 5-15 per seat per month with feature gates. Over 3 years on annual billing the math works out at roughly EUR 150 vs EUR 180-540 for the alternatives - and the data is yours throughout.

I already use another time tracker. Can I bring my history?

Clockify CSV: yes, one click - Settings > Import Clockify CSV. Use the "Detailed report" CSV export; the importer maps Project to Client (with a Client-column fallback), creates the customer list automatically, and writes the entries into your local time-entries store.
Other SaaS trackers: no dedicated importer yet. The shape of the data is similar though - export from your current tool to CSV, rename the columns to match the Clockify Detailed-report format (the importer is forgiving about exact header names), and run the same import. Native importers for additional formats are on the roadmap.
